International News Assignment

LiveStation Observation
While watching the different channels on LiveStation, it was clear to me which channels seemed to be sponsored by their governments and which were funded by private enterprises. For example, the vast majority of reports covered by the Russian channel, RT, were focused on things that the Russian government were involved in, and always reflected the Russian government in a positive light; such as their government's contribution to environmental projects, the prosecution of criminals that commit acts of violence against government officials, and their country's rising position in the global economy.

Al Jazeera Questions
1. I believe that the internet would be more effective mean for Al Jazeera to broadcast their stories to American audiences because most of the stories are based on situations occurring abroad and do not directly influence or relate to the majority of the American population. However, the smaller population of American Muslms that do have an interest in the subjects covered by Al Jazeera can access the full content of their news broadcasts as they are posted on their website as well.

2.If there were more coverage of stories occurring in the United States, or that affected a greater population than Muslims in America, broadcasts by Al Jazeera should be allowed. would Since the majority of these stories are relevant only to a minority of the American population, I do not believe a television broadcast would be the appropriate method to distribute information to audiences in America.

3. Al Jazeera's approach to telling news is more documentary-like, where news reporters do more field reporting. The news channel also focuses more on international issues such as poverty, economic issues,, and foreign policies, while most American news channels that I have observed tend to focus primarily on domestic issues.

4. I believe Al Jazeera English does a good job of adhering to their code of ethics. Their news reports provide a clear and in-depth look into significant international issues while addressing the goals and objectives in the third code of ethic. The 6th code of ethic mentions the representation of various cultures and socieities and throughout the news reports I watched, Al Jazeera touched on issues in numerous countries on five continents.

SEB adds second Wiz Khalifa Show

The SEB knew that up and coming hip-hop artist Wiz Khalifa would be likely to sell out a concert at WSU, however, few predicted he would sell out the show in less than six hours. After witnessing the astonishingly high demand for tickets to the Wiz Khalifa concert this Wednesday, Oct. 13th, the SEB was able to negotiate a second show to be added. This show will take place in the CUB Ballroom immediately following the first show, at 10:30p.m. Students can purchase their tickets for the second show at the Cougar Card Center in the CUB on October 7th at 8:00 a.m for $15.

The SEB was inspired to have Wiz Khalifa at one of their events throughout the school year after a Facebook group titled "Bring Wiz Khalifa to Pullman" emerged and drew in hundreds of group members. The Facebook event page for the Wiz Khalifa concert has already generated 2,958 students that have RSVP'd to attend the concerts. Wiz Khalifa is stopping in Pullman on his 2010 tour across the nation.

Calling all Tosh.0 Fans!

Daniel Tosh is bringing his hit comedy show Tosh.0 to Spokane's INB Performing Arts Center on Thursday, November 18 at 7:30 p.m. Tosh Tour Twenty Ten kicked off at the Mirage hotel and casino in Las Vegas in late July, and will appear in 60 cities across the nation. Tosh.0 gave Seattle fans two chances to catch the stand-up show at the Paramount Theatre in back-to-back shows on November 20th, but both times quickly sold out. Tickets for the Spokane show are $35 and can be purchased through TicketWest.com.

The tour is an extension of Comedy Central's show Tosh.0, where comedian Daniel Tosh picks obscure, hilarious, and often inappropriate videos from the internet to air on his show. Tosh uses his sarcastic and whitty humor to commentate and roast the people and topics featured in the videos, and bring them onto the show for a web redemption. Tune into Comedy Central to catch a new episode of Tosh.0 every Wednesday night at 10:30 p.m.
